Unitized panels: moving from the high-technological glass façade systems to a common façade solution with any openings distribution and finishing material possibilities.

We do not fail to insist on the inadequacy of resorting to nearly completely glassed façades in our climate. That said, and letting ourselves get carried away by formal issues, we can only applaud the wise decision to force imperfection.

This is a unitized façade system, which means a completely prefabricated curtain wall solution. A panel is used with all the onsite mounting benefits that panels can have. What is more it is light, so big components can be used that are perhaps two stories high. During preassembly, all the façade layers can be incorporated into the same frame, and thus into a single panel. The glass does not need to be related to transparency; it can simply cover the blind area of the façade to provide a continuous image from the outside, as we normally do with the slab edge front.

Seeking for the nearly complete glass continuity in the façade has led to a solution for the fire spreading interruption between floors that is solved some centimetres offset from the glass pane. 

That way, the number of joints in the façade is reduced, and so the need for profiles. The cutting does not show so evidently what is happening in the back of the façade. This gap between the glass and the sectoring panel can be used for placing a rolling blind or indirect lighting. An appropriate illumination may permit blurring the bottom limit of this sectoring element.

Load bearing facades are nowadays a common solution due to the permeability they permit in the inner space. Some of those structures are let to be seen from the outside, some of them are not.

The modular and low density character of the mat building typology in which the project is based gives as a result a large number of façades, but of similar characteristics. Due to this premise, it was chosen an unitized panel system of double height that respond to the big and regular dimensions of the building, with the aim of systematizing its construction.

PROJECT'S CONTEXT This project tries to rethink the role of the Gran Via and the relationship between the different urban areas approaching El Prat to l'Hospitalet. A series of structural modules are proposed as a base to which trusses can be added.The module could be implemented in other places as a roof that’s able to collect water and produce energy. Responding to the changing needs of the infrastructure, the new building, which is going to host the new Technology Park, is a flexible space where the facilities and construction solutions are based on the Plug&Play system.

There is little to say here, it is just a masterpiece!

This façade is not watertight and it is not airtight. Depending on the density and size of the stones, it protects against direct sun radiation but without managing the visual relationship with the outside. It considerably blocks the entry of light, gives privacy and protects from intrusion. If it is true that, together with a drained cavity, it would constitute a watertight envelope, but it seems that this is not the case here.

Energy-efficient architecture does not have to have a certain image. This is clear in the work of Sauerbruch & Hutton, which has a sober but colourful image.
